Social triggers

Coffee shops were the first social networks. They were places to exchange information, to test out new ideas, to banter, and to work. Despite today’s constant digital interconnectedness, the coffee shop is still the place to meet.

People use social media today as a way to set up face to face conversations at the coffee shop. Cafes help facilitate discussion by providing just the right amount of background noise, or Coffitivity. Coffee also helps relieve tension by giving people something to hold.

Meanwhile, the bar is the evening version of the coffee shop. While generally louder, it too is a neutral place for bonding where holding a beer helps people relax and fit in. Beer and coffee are popular widgets to socialize with. When’s the last time you met someone over water?

It doesn’t matter where people meet as long as they always have somewhere to go. It just so happens that cafes and bars, coffee and beer, is where the conversation starts.
