From YouTube to YouNow

Speechless. Done. Dusted. Old.

That is how I felt after trying YouNow, the emerging live streaming app for teens.

With Snapchat, at least you feel like you have an element of control over what you broadcast. With YouNow, you are broadcasting live, and you have to be entertaining as soon as the camera goes on, or people will sign off.

I remember when I first started blogging. I feared what people would think about me. However, because I started blogging on Tumblr, the platform gave me the confidence to speak my mind. That audacity has carried through to today on my other channels, primarily Twitter and Instagram.

I want to do more video, but I am the having the same challenge I experienced when first blogging — what do I say? I cannot act. I am used to capturing interesting things in front of me. Moreover, I do not find my face to the camera to be fascinating.

However, teens do not care about quality. A video is their primary vehicle for expression. It is raw, it is real, and it is mostly unedited.

Facebook is uncool. Instagram, Twitter, and Tumblr are old news. However, everybody on the Internet still wants to be naked and famous. YouNow reminds me of Vine; a dozen social media superstars will take it over and then move on to the big screen. However, the YouNow UI is a bit of a mess, a cross between an AOL chat room and widget-happy Myspace.

YouTube is still the hegemon of online video. It would make sense to acquire YouNow and keep it as a separate network before folding into YouTube as those users mature.

Until then, I will still be practicing my live camera face.
