7 New tunes to peep this week

What a week.  I was one of the lucky Northeasterners to retain my power after Hurricane Sandy thanks to wires being built underground rather than on wooden toothpicks.  Please remember to donate to the Disaster Relief if you haven’t already.

Get your headphones on:

  • Alert, rude tune from a Rude Kid.  ”Saturday” is the standout track on the One Week album. [File under grime, dubstep.  Sounds like Wiley met Actress.]
  • Invisible’s “The Wall” gets covered by Anna Calvi.  [File under rock electronica.  Sounds like Thom Yorke meets Stateless.]
  • Haunting, downtempo, and beautiful.  Up and coming artist Guerre really does it right on “Rashad,” also a free download.  [File under electronic pop.  Sounds like James Blake.]
  • Photek has a new album KU:PALM.  ”Pyramids” (free download) is an interesting one.  Photek also produced a DJ Kicks early this year which featured the dope track “Levitation.”  [File under ambient, electronica.  Sounds like Photek, since he’s one of the electronic pioneers going back to his seminal album Modus Operandi in 1997.]
  • touch of magic from UK producer Daniel Avery on his track “Water Jump.”  [File under one hell of a dance groove.  Sounds other another British electronic great, Faithless.]
  • Is Joey Bada$$ New York’s new Nas?  I’d say he’s definitely got a shot after a slew of well produced songs/videos including “Waves,” which he also performed live on the Jimmy Fallon Show.  [File under hip-hop/rap.  Sounds like some early 90s beats and rhymes, aka Nas, Mob Deep, etc.]
  • Minimalist dance floor material via Teen Daze on “By Love.”  [File under ambient electronica.  Sounds like Toro y Moi.]
