Age and Usability on Social Media Networks

Your mom doesn’t just like your Facebook pictures. She likes each photo individually. There’s a big difference in adopting modern technology and how one uses it.

My friends don’t even like my posts anymore. They just scroll through their feeds and digest the latest. It’s no wonder that Facebook changed its algorithm to time spent rather than likes and comments.

Adults also act differently than the kids on Snapchat. The kids post full selfies. They know how to angle the front-facing camera. The older folks capture only half of their face, magically, and prefer photos instead of videos. The kids vlog.

Gone are the days when adults waited to join emerging social networks. They still may be technologically incompetent but they’re quicker at adopting new ways to communicate. Everyone knows mobile. Regardless of age, mobile users wants to try something new so they can stay up to speed.

Just don’t expect your mom to know the difference between sending snaps from one to one and one to many, a la Stories. That secret remains with the kids, for now.
