Birthdays in the social space…

have completely shifted from public to private moments. Our closest friends or colleagues congratulate us via Facebook direct messages. Some “friends” still write on the wall, which sparks birthday wishes from people you don’t remember friending in the first place. Unsubscribe/delete.

Social media has matured, moving away from the mimetic desire to shout to everyone into quieter, more intimate moments. Snapchat is the paragon of this behavioral change. So is the return to handwritten notes, snail mail, and phone calls, outside social.

Care is a delicate emotion, evinced through platform and context. The medium is the message.

Admission: Yes, it’s my birthday today. Thanks for inspiring the blog post.
