The Peter Franks Group is an instrumental and jazz beat collective from Bournemouth, England. The fresh and crisp flute-driven track ‘Leaving This Place’ is one of the standout tracks off the band’s album Days Past. ‘Inner Most’ is also a moody gem.
“…A real timeless feel to this courtesy of the joint talents of Halsall, Urquhart, Mwamba, Crennell, Maffei and Manners – but the real magic is in the dreamy keyboard work of Peter Franks and his inventive production techniques.”
DJ Rum is UK electronic producer Felix Manuel. His latest drop the Forgetting EP blends a melange of vibes including jazz, juke, and breakbeat rhythms. The track ‘Projection’ sounds like a Cinematic Orchestra piece.
It’s hard to nail down the best track from the genre-hopping EP; all tracks are tasty in their own right. But the shifty pace of ‘Induction’ which made it debut on the Gilles Peterson show may delight your ears as well.
Be sure to check out the crunchy bass on the 2016 B-side release of ‘Abandon Me’ as well:
Calling themselves “ambassadors for the obscure,” The Comet Is Coming was recently nominated for a Mercury prize for their funky electro-jazz album Channel The Spirits. In an interview with Bandcamp, the band said they recorded the album in a three-day sprint. Channeling the planet’s impending doom, keyboardist Dan Leavers (Danalogue the Conqueror) said:
“If it was the last day on earth, and a comet was literally coming, how are you going to play? How are you going to party? I feel like the name conjures up that [sense of] apocalypse. Once you understand that you are not going to live forever, does that change what you’re going to do? It’s been an interesting name to get our heads around.”
But The Comet Is Coming is not all doom and gloom. The track “Space Carnival” sounds like it could be the celebratory arrival song for the first manned mission to Mars.
The world is just getting a taste of this emerging talent out of London who is trying to revive the sounds of trip-hop that Massive Attack and Portishead pioneered in their heyday. His latest drop ‘Dark Hour’ continues his overall downtempo vibe.
Signed to underground dub label Deep Heads, known for a library of other tasty releases from label head Zed Bias, Walker released his debut album Augmented 7 last year. The album incorporated elements of dub, reggae, and downtempo all tied to a jazz tone. Take a listen to the collaboration with soul singer Segilola below.
