Control Your Own Content

We should own our data, build our own websites, and let the social networking services and RSS feeds aggregate our content.

When I worked at a record label, the main frustration was that the retailers owned all the consumer data.

But then we set up product dedicated micro-sites to sell to fans directly. We became the retailer and kept all the data, which we kept on file for future product releases.

We should be controlling data at the personal level too.

It only takes about 5 minutes to sign up to Tumblr, select a reasonable theme, and start posting content.  It takes the same amount of time to set up a blog of if you prefer, Typepad or Posterous.  Just start posting.

By creating our own domains we control the content, creative, and the community that follows us.  Make people come to YOUR page.

We can syndicate our content to the social networks for context and promotion.
