Essay writing and reading is our resistance to the pygmy-fication of the language animal; our shrinkage into the brand, the sound bite, the business platitude; the solipsistic tweet. Essays are the last, heroic stand for the seriousness of prose entertainment; our best hope of liberating text from texting.

Simon Schama in “Why I Write.”

People don’t read books as much as they used to. They get so distracted by bite-sized information that long-form content looks intimidating.  Compare 140 characters or a :30 second YouTube video to a 500 page book.

While people are reading less books, they’re writing more. Social networks are public microphones.  You can even become a published author and sells an e-book on Amazon.

Reading long-form is down but our self-expression is up.  Those that balance the two are best prepared to make sense of the 21s century.
