Forget music, Instagram shapes your identity

People used to define themselves by their musical tastes. Today, they use Instagram to signal their identity.

Once upon a time, following @thefatjewish meant you were in the know. But users became more particular with their tastes, following influencers and fashionistas that solidified their persona. In short, Instagram became your Tumblr blog.

It’s not just what you post but who you know. People become influencers when they connect with other star users and create similar content.

And you wonder why all Instagrams look the same?

The shallow eyeball loves a formula: beaches, beautiful hair, shopping hauls, food porn, dogs, and well-lit, colorful photos. If you want to look at even prettier photos, use VSCO, which is intentionally becoming more social like Instagram.

Instagram shapes your identity. Like your old mixtapes, your Instagram profile reveals your tastes and who you aspire to be.
