I started off using every filter imaginable on Instagram. In fact, I even filtered photos before I imported them into Instagram. I used Camera+’s filters first and then brought the image into Instagram to apply an additional filter layer.
The pre-filter and filter process ensured that my images were full of cool colors and other interesting effects.
Overtime though the filtering process became incredibly fake and boring. It was extra work to apply a filter and it removed the authenticity and natural challenge of taking a great photo.
Today, I challenge myself to be more organic; I try to take images with natural lighting which means taking shots from different perspectives until I get it right. I also try to avoid using Instagram’s sunburst feature.
As a result, my Instagram photos are much simpler. They look and feel much lighter, more authentic. The Instagram community also appreciates them more.
It’s easy to get sucked into one click augmentation effects. But less filtering means better photography. Pictures stand out more when they don’t have extra layers of fat.
