Outlier

Creation emerges from need.  Find a hole in the marketplace and fill it.  You do the work instead of waiting for others to make it for you.

That’s the story of Abe Burmeister and why he co-founded Outlier.

The Internet enables niche products to find any audience across the world.  With a direct to consumer website, an awesome product, and some marketing to build awareness, one can make it happen.

We can’t always depend on large brands to tailor products for us.

If you can’t find something, take a stab at making it yourself and building an audience on the Internet that will buy your stuff.

You don’t need salespeople, just a product designer, a website, and someone to tell the world about it and field emails and calls.

Stand still at your own frustration or come up with a solution that solves a problem for you and many others.  You just might end up building a company.

Maurice Sendak’s Beautiful Struggle

Life experiences impact our imagination. Usually, it's the burdensome experiences that spawn the most creative moments. If all things were going well, we may not spend the time to collect our thoughts and visualize how things could be better.

Maurice Sendak will be remembered for his artistic and storytelling brilliance, which evolved through a lifetime of personal regret and suffering. His best art came out particularly during his life's hardest moments.

Creativity can be a sufferer's medicine. We revive life when we enjoy our crazy imaginations.

“Dear Mr. Sendak,” read one, from an 8-year-old boy. “How much does it cost to get to where the wild things are? If it is not expensive, my sister and I would like to spend the summer there.”

The full obituary.

Creativity With A Lowercase “c”

Creativity can be learned and unlearned for that matter:

…most children display highly creative thinking before going to school but gradually lose this creativity as they progress through schooling. You can imagine pretty much the same kind of process going on as initially young, enthusiastic recruits proceed up the corporate ladder.

Rote practice and standardization suck our creativity. Agreed that some skills are essential like math, spelling, and proper grammar but after that, it’s time to think and be different.

The good news is that while many people lose creativity they can easily get it back. Not everyone is Steve Jobs but everyone can be the prick that gets the head honchos like Jobs to explore other stuff.

Some people are born creative, others just feel inspired or force it out. However, you do it just remember to share it with others. Crazy ideas run the world.

MLK’s Tech Revolution

“There can be no gainsaying of the fact that a great revolution is taking place in the world today. In a sense it is a triple revolution: that is, a technological revolution, with the impact of automation and cybernation; then there is a revolution in weaponry, with the emergence of atomic and nuclear weapons of warfare; then there is a human rights revolution, with the freedom explosion that is taking place all over the world. Yes, we do live in a period where changes are taking place”.

— Martin Luther King Jr.

Prescient, a man that saw the intersection of freedom and technology.

Imagine the power of his words in 140 characters.
