Social Media and the Art World: Buying and Selling Art on Instagram

Musicians don’t necessarily need record companies to distribute their work anymore—anyone can put an mp3 up on SoundCloud or video on YouTube and reach millions. Similarly, Schlenker says, Instagram gives artists the ability to control the way their story is told, and find people who want to hear it.

It’s a DIY world. Bedroom artists should be licking their chops.

“Vincent van Gogh sold only one painting in his lifetime, maybe he would have wanted to sell through Instagram if he could.”

Learning how to DIY

It’s not the work so much as the packaging and distribution that stops people from shipping.

But the days of professional book or record design, manufacturing, inventory, recording, and distribution are all over. You’ve got a computer, a Smartphone, and the Internet to get all that done.

There’s still a big gap between the creatives producing the content and self-publishing. Some content owners assume the old system of print and contracts. Only of they knew how to run the show they could be their own label, own the rights to their content, and sell directly to buyers.

Technology isn’t democratizing the tools as fast as you think. There are heaps of people doing the work and waiting to be discovered.

Taking ownership is now an essential part of the creative process. The new world requires that you do a lot of the marketing and sales yourself.

Generation Z: Extreme DIY Culture

Generation Z wants to make and personalize their own stuff. They expect to download the essential pieces and mash up their own product.

Generation Y still wants to show off what they find. They set up blogs to curate interests; they dabble in apps like GarageBand to make music from scratch. Generation Y just wants the like.

Generation Z kids are digital creators, benefiting from the availability of handheld tools, endless information, and instant distribution. They expect to be famous, even for 15 minutes.

The new generation wants to create life through their screens, downloading the experience to make it their own.

Generation Z will go beyond beta, building and tweaking designs exactly to their vision to be enjoyed and consumed by themselves and their friends.
