Badges? We Don’t Need No LinkedIn Badges

there’s less premium for your learning, say, biochemistry at Harvard rather than Swindon Polytechnic: as long as you know the biochemistry, my hiring decision will be tied to your social graph, not the hack of institutional badges.

Interesting thoughts on social media (Quora, Twitter, et al.) credibility outweighing the college degree. The degree may just provide extra context to a person’s job application.

What’s the Point of Creativity?

I believe that the best creativity comes from a much deeper place than the desire to win. It comes from a desire to contribute to the lives of others, either by introducing something new that improves the quality of their lives or by showing people that something thought to be impossible is in fact possible. When you change people’s perceptions about what can be accomplished or achieved, you contribute to their humanity in the richest possible way. You give them hope for the future — a sense that life is not the demoralizing, unchanging drudgery day after day that the world so often teaches us that it is.

Competition, greed, and power shouldn’t be the impetus of creativity. Creativity is about doing the remarkable and inspiring others to do the same.

Creativity is about making the world a better place and making people see and think differently. Sometimes, creativity is just pointing out the obvious.

Please Stop Complaining About How Busy You Are

When everyone around us is “slammed,” it’s easy to feel guilty if we’re not slaving away on a never-ending treadmill of toil. By trying to compete about it, we’re only adding to that pool of water everyone seems to be constantly “treading” in. And all this complaining is having serious effects on our mental health.

Everyone is busy inside and outside the office at different times. We shouldn’t feel the need to make ourselves more busy and tired just so we can feel the same way.

You can answer emails and attend meetings all day along and still not get anywhere. We should celebrate time management and quality of work rather than living up to fatigue. We still need energy to enjoy life.

A Harvard Economist’s Surprisingly Simple Productivity Secret

“All those times that I thought I was using my time well – ‘Hey, I’ve got five minutes, let me check my email’ – I was actually using my bandwidth badly.” – Sendhil Mullainathan

Instead of checking your cell phone, use that time to think and focus, maybe even explore the thoughts of boredom.

The Disciplined Pursuit of Less

Less is more.  The key to happiness in life and our career is simplification, removing the stuff that has no value and focusing on the stuff that does.

Ask yourself 3 questions:

  1. “What am I deeply passionate about?”
  2. “What taps my talent?”
  3. “What meets a significant need in the world?”

The formula for continued success.

When you’re sketching something, you have to choose which marks to make on the page. It forces you to make decisions about what’s important and what’s not.

Create a Life with Purpose

  1. Leave the world with something it can remember.
  2. Measure how you achieve that goal.

God is not an accountant.
