Faking Confidence

There’s a big difference between competence and confidence. Someone who talks a lot is not necessarily competent. A big mouth rarely equates to skills.

All we really just want to know how competent someone is. Confidence is a distractor.

Competence is true confidence. Humility > Arrogance.

First Touch

Everybody admired the way Zinedine Zidane touched the football because he was always two steps ahead. He saw the future before it happened and just worked backward to execute.

You can galvanize a player’s effort and refine his/her skills but you can’t teach them instinctiveness. That comes from years of extra practice.

The beauty of the first touch is that it appears effortless. Sometimes plays happen without even touching the ball at all. Talent is one thing but instinct inspires all the magic.

Lame to Fame

“Anything you can do I can do better; I can do anything better than you.”

Annie

Are celebrities that much better than you? Or did they prepare and hit their luck at the right time, playing best when their best needed.

There may not be much that separates your skills from the celebrity, other than that they succeeded and you didn’t.

But the gap widens once they’re in. Their coaches, their network, their fan following, goes beyond any services a layman could afford.

Your blown away by celebrity status, so far behind and disconnected it’s unlikely that your chance will ever come. But maybe being famous isn’t even your goal. You like to produce in anonymity. You enjoy the practice for what it is.

Fame isn’t the goal of creativity. Fame tries to capitalize on good effort so it can let marketing do the rest. The pleasure in doing anything is in the performance, minus the expectations, otherwise we’re just fighting within ourselves to impress other people.

As long as you’re learning

You may not be in the right spot. You may feel like others are progressing faster. You may feel the need to quit and start anew.

But as long as you’re learning, you should think twice about giving up. Education is an invaluable resource. Technology is accelerating so fast today you have no choice but to adapt and stay on top of the latest developments.

If you have access to the right tools and use them to your advantage it’s almost impossible to fall back. Learning is a choice. You may feel stuck in work title but this is exactly the moment to polish the edges, to strengthen your work with facts and new ideas.

Your day will come, and you’ll be more prepared than the rest of them. You’ll also be just as busy. Never lose your sense of wonder.
