STUFF – Strata

STUFF is a five piece instrumental band from Antwerp, Belgium. ‘Strata’ is the first track from the band’s second album old dreams new planets due out April 28th.

The song vacillates from broken jazz before weaving into a funky, electronic jungle. Says the quintet’s SoundCloud page, “it makes you doubt whether you’re at a rave or at a fusion jazz concert in some late 80’s basement.”

If you like the cross-genre hybrid, peep Christian Scott or The Peter Franks Group.

Objekt – Needle And Thread

Objekt is Berlin-based electronic producer TJ Hertz. Joining the avant-garde composer Actress, Hertz also excels in future, data-driven music. I like the way he describes his music on his Soundcloud:

“Adventures in machine music built to make subs rattle and feet wiggle; a convoluted mess of elektrology and teknology, 3-step, bass-core, post windmill, proto-minimal wankstep, gondola, shithouse, acid wonk, ambient gabber, no more, no less.”

DJ Rum – Induction & Protection

DJ Rum AKA Felix Manuel (image courtesy the artist)

DJ Rum is UK electronic producer Felix Manuel. His latest drop the Forgetting EP blends a melange of vibes including jazz, juke, and breakbeat rhythms. The track ‘Projection’ sounds like a Cinematic Orchestra piece.

It’s hard to nail down the best track from the genre-hopping EP; all tracks are tasty in their own right. But the shifty pace of ‘Induction’ which made it debut on the Gilles Peterson show may delight your ears as well.

Be sure to check out the crunchy bass on the 2016 B-side release of ‘Abandon Me’ as well:

Christian Löffler – Myiami

German producer Christian Löffler describes his music as melancholy combined with euphoria. I closed out my Best of last year with his magical track ‘York.’ As he describes on his Bandcamp page:

“All my music is connected by a gloomy spirit, which is minted by a warm sincerity. I try to merge all kinds of different acoustic colors to obtain this feeling in my music.”

Sound mimics environment

The young producer makes his tracks in a log cabin overlooking the Baltic Sea. Tracks on his latest album Mare place you in his wandering, coastal environment. His subtle field recordings and moody synthesizers create a Walden state of mind.

Favorite tracks: Myiami, Haul, Swim, Krone
