The random things we collect

We can all admit to collecting something weird. For me, it was Absolute Vodka ads in the 5th grade. They were currency and could often get you Cheeze-its instead of Cheetos, and sometimes could be swapped for hard cash.

I also went through a year of collecting hotel pens. My dad was always bringing them home from business trips, so when we went on vacation with the family, I always had the extra pleasure in snagging my own.

Inspired by New Museum’s exhibition called ‘The Keeper,’ The New York Times asked its readers to submit their hoarding obsessions. Below is my favorite.

“For one year, at the end of every month, I collected and saved the contents of my vacuum cleaner.

Collecting physical things is just the start. One professor believes that collecting and cataloging our digital archives will be a common trait of the educated.

The Unleashed Mind: Why Creative People Are Eccentric

  • People who are highly creative often have odd thoughts and behaviors—and vice versa.
  • Both creativity and eccentricity may be the result of genetic variations that increase cognitive disinhibition—the brain’s failure to filter out extraneous information.
  • When unfiltered information reaches conscious awareness in the brains of people who are highly intelligent and can process this information without being overwhelmed, it may lead to exceptional insights and sensations.

Weirdness is valuable.

We Aren’t the World

“American participants are exceptional even within the unusual population of Westerners—outliers among outliers.”

Get weird or go home. Normal is boring.

Via Seth’s Blog

In the words of the philosopher Dr. Seuss, “We are all a little weird and life’s a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love.”

Weirdness, Americanness.

When to get weird

Weirdness is an inherent gene that gets stronger through curiosity and experience.  Weirdness is also a strategic advantage.

Weirdness allows you to think different and conform at the same time.  You get to see both sides and rise above sidedness itself.  That’s truly genius.

Weirdness still requires proper behavior.  It’s not a ticket to reject the rules.  Weirdness is, however, an all access pass to dive deep into creative efforts.

Your should reflect all your weirdness in your work.  What you do behind the scenes is what stands out and lives on, not your persona.

Get weird in your art.  Don’t abuse it any other way.
