Art requires the long look,” said culture critic Robert Hughes. In these dark times, art offers a way for people to interpret and cope with the paradoxes in American modernity.

The Kardashians reign. Big egos unite and mash together. Author Colson Whitehead proposes that in a future of uncertainty to “be kind to everybody, make art and fight the power.”

Shit is complicated. But there's no better way to funnel the frustration than to rage into your art, not only to express dissent but to make people think twice and rise above sidedness altogether.

The world isn't black and white, nor is it a Pantone color of the year. It's more subtle and rapidly changing, shaken up and distorted until it finds balance again. Abstraction is a new certainty.
