Twitter, a Competitive Media Company

#Nascar is the beginning of Twitter as a media company, not just a global communications network.

Last night I followed the US men’s soccer game on Twitter because it wasn’t on TV.  Even if it had been I was watching the NBA Finals anyway so Twitter would’ve still been my main source for second screen updates.

Twitter has the makings of news publication and sports channel.  It won’t be long before it owns content rights exclusively.

Dave Winer had the first foresight:

A few years ago I was so sure that Twitter would be competing with news orgs that I urged them to start their own realtime networks to compete with Twitter. Just in case I’m right.
