Writing about life and arts

What’s at hand

The age of handwriting is over. And so, too, maybe the era of deep thought. That’s probably an exaggeration, but stick with me.

Writing by hand requires mind and pen coordination so that one never outpaces the other. This tempered speed, labeled fluency, is a bit like dribbling a basketball or soccer ball. You dictate the pace, accelerate, decelerate, and create by letting the game come to you. Who else on your team is open? Where are the holes that need filling?

Handwriting is slower and more burdensome than computer keys (minus carpal tunnel), but the quality is better in the aggregate effort. The pen steers and the keyboard clicks into the void.

The digital output may be the same, even superior, but the ideas are probably less refined. Generating complexity needs an enlightened, progressive present, a jog or bicycle ride, not a sprint. Intentional skipping is even more visceral.
